Prosecuting the Attempted Coup
Let’s explore how the Justice Department should go about holding those responsible for the January 6 attempted coup of our American government accountable.
1. The first step is for Attorney General Merrick Garland to prosecute Trump for lying to millions of Americans about the 2020 election having been stolen. It is necessary to begin with this charge so that when the more serious charges are made, Americans have a solid understanding of why they are necessary. This first charge also intends to help Trump supporters turn against him.
2. Step two is to prosecute Trump and the others responsible using the following three charges. Because Trump did not expect his mob to have any effect on Biden’s confirmation by peacefully standing outside of the Capital, he planned for them to violently attack. Further evidence of this is that he refused to end the occupation and violence for over three hours. That was a very serious dereliction of duty. Trumps’ third high crime was that he intimidated elections officials.
3. Step three is to hold Republican candidates for November’s election accountable for their continuing support for Trump. Democrats can and must win that election by historic margins that allow them to control Congress strongly enough for Biden to pass very important legislation beginning in 2023.
Once those three steps have been accomplished, America must pass much stronger laws against disinformation. These are the themes for our discussion.
I look forward to seeing you.
